Yorkshire start-up raises £3m for 3D printer using electron beams to fuse metal

A West Yorkshire start-up developing machines that use electron beams to 3D print with metal has raised £3m in funding.

Huddersfield firm Wayland Additive has raised the funding from technology investors Longwall Ventures and the Angel CoFund.

Will Richardson, the chief executive, said his firm’s prototype 3D printer is quicker and more reliable than competing metal printing products because of its use of an electron beam rather than a laser. The technology uses the beam to fuse together metal filings to construct parts.

The business plans to use the new funding to develop its final product, which it hopes to begin selling in May 2021 to about six customers.
